The Brothers Warner

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Today’s strip is kindof a callback to an early influence on me: the old school Warner Brothers cartoons. I’m talking about Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Roadrunner, and the whole Lonney Tunes crew. I love those cartoons, and one of the ones that always stuck with me through the years is the one where Bugs is starring in a movie, and Daffy is jealous, so Daffy gets cast as the stunt double. Which of course means every time something bad is about to happen to bugs, someone off camera yells, “Cut! Send in the Double!” And then Daffy gets blown to smithereens.

I love how it starts off as kindof innocuous, like Daffy getting hit on the head with an anvil or something, and by the end of the cartoon, he’s getting blown up, and at one point, Bugs is piloting a plane that careening to the ground, and it stops in midair, Daffy flies in and trades places with him, and proceeds to the most horrendous plane-crash ever. Comedy Gold.

Ah, I love the violence against cartoon animals…  I just wish that in my own life I had a tiny man off in distance that could shout, “Cut! Send in the double!”And then someone else could come in and get chewed out by the boss, or rejected by the girl, or accidentally burned by the george foreman, then fall backwards into a model airplane I struggled to build for months, and knock over a bookshelf and have the books fall all over them as a girl rejects them over IM.

Sigh… I am Daffy…
