Stimulation

I got an interesting letter in the mail the other day. It was from the government, telling me that I was about to receive an “economic stimulus package.”

Many of you no doubt are receiving the same things. The idea is that we all go out and buy, buy, buy, and make the economy work again. But times are tough all around, and I have that sneaking feeling that most people will use their economic stimulation to buy gas, or pay rent, or get food, or some of those more basic necessities.

I, on the other hand, feel compelled to do my duty to this country. To make the sacrifices necessary to help the economy. I must do the right thing in the face of adversity…

So I’m buying an iMac.

You don’t understand what this means for me – I am a lifetime PC user. I’ve been well versed in windows since “Windows 3.1 for Workgroups” was released. I was there when windows 95 blew our minds with the “start” button. I was there when Windows ME blew our minds with how crappy it was.

But its time to face the facts. Vista is terrible. Microsoft no longer inspires the confidence that it once did, and I find that I can no longer support them. It’s time to make the switch to mac.

I’ve used macs a little bit, but not a ton. I’m excited and terrified at the same time. It’s like I’m about to go on a date with the really hot girl I’ve always admired but never been able to talk to. So I appeal to you – mac users of the world – got any advice? What do I need or not need? What software should I look into getting? How do I use garage band?

I’m so excited… I’m so scared…

Welcome to the mac family. Go a get yourself the book: “The Missing Manual: Leopard Edition” it is the best series out there on helping you make the change. It covers everything both simple and complex so that you don’t feel like you can’t figure it out.

    you….you..you traitor….

Thanks everybody! Except you Pat, stop guilt-tripping me about buying superior hardware…

Agnostic-thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely check out that book. I could use a few pointers in learning exactly how mac is set up – it’s pretty intuitive, but some little confuse me here and there. Awesome Pro-tip!

    Nice line…
please remember the Amish man says,” don’t drink or drive”
(I wonder if the online Amish community will be offended)

“about buying (SLIGHTLY) superior hardware”…that costs a SUPERIOR amount. I’ve talked to enough MAC users that say they simply traded old problems for new, maybe fewer. I can deal with the devil I know better than the devil I don’t. Good luck…I’m sure I’m wrong. (What I do know is that after I buy my Microsoft, I’ll be spending my extra money on video games, pizza and soda, ammunition, and car magazines. “These are a few of my favorite things.”) :-)

I took me a second to figure out what the online Amish community would look like… nice joke there, J!

Chris, you make a strong case about Macs costing more. But what you also have to consider, is am I going to do what is my duty as a responsible American (sorry, it’s pronounced, ‘Merican!) citizen, and spend the most amount of money possible, to get our economy moving?

The answer of couse, is yes. Because pizza moves the economy as much as computers.

    Wait a second… “ammunition”?

  8. Chris B.

Yeah, ammunition. I’m a responsible, gun owning, ‘Merican. I enjoy blowing S@&! up. :-)

The Amish online community is a small group of Amish Tight-Rope Walking enthusiasts.

  10. Mike

Dude, I would pay so much money to see an Amish tight-rope walking competition…

    I will never forgive you….

I don’t even know you any more *sob*
