Austin Report
July 21st, 2008Greetings all, I’m back, healthy and a lot less wealthy from a great weekend in Austin. I got to see RX Bandits live, which I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now, and it was greatness, they put on a great show. Spent some time at Lake Travis, saw some old friends, saw some great jazz, and had some great drinks, and also saw Batman again. Couldn’t ask for a more perfect little mini-vacation.
I was worried my iPod wouldn’t make it through the weekend, since I couldn’t find my charger… but ‘Ein’ (thats my iPod’s name, actually, its the ‘Ein Mark II’) held up great, and I still had some charge left after listening to it all the way there, around town over the weekend, and through the drive back as well. Go Apple! (Who thought I’d ever be saying that?)
But now I’m back, and we’re startin’ up a new storyline that’ll change the status quo of our Dorks here for a little while — stay tuned, constant readers!

I’m having an existential crisis because of seeing RX. Forever they have been one of my top five fav bands…but like 3 weeks ago I read that Matt Embree is a huge heroin addict…I didn’t believe it…especially when you listen to his lyrics, I mean the guy totally bashes the pill popping society we live in in the song “In Her Drawer.” But after seeing them, I really believe he is on SOMETHING much stronger than just pot and I can’t respect that at all. I came away from that show loving the guy in the band I used to hate (the new trombone player) and maybe hating the guy I used to love (Matt)! I don’t know how to feel! On an up note I got to talk to Rich, the mastermind behind Sound of Animals Fighting and he is a really nice guy that gave me some great info about upcoming stuff for SoAF. Rock!
P.S. Kids that go to concerts now-a-days are f’ing a’holes. I know that makes me sound old and grumpy, but seriously, you f’ing kids need to learn some concert etiquette, or next time more than one of you will get punched by Mike Lane.

Well, I think I love RX almost as much as you, sir, but I didn’t really notice Matt being messed up at the Austin show, he was very energetic, engaged, and having a good time from my perspective. I did notice a significant amount of weight loss, which doesn’t mean drugs necessarily, but it was very noticeable. If he is struggling, it certainly casts a shadow over a lot of his anti-drug lyrics — much in the way that Two-Face casts a shadow on Harvery Dent’s career (like how I brought that back?). In any case, if the drug use is really happening, I hope he is able to recognize the problem and deal with it.
You’re right about the trombone player, too — he kinda stole the show! He was awesome to watch, and while I think they could use a sax to round out the horn sound, it was a blast to watch him.
And lets watch the language a bit, Mr. Face… I understand where you’re coming from, bad crowds (either overly unruly, or underly excited and ambivalent) have ruined plenty of shows for me. But there’s no need to be harsh about it. Atleast they’re getting exposed to some cool music!

…and getting punched in the face in the process. No teen-hood is complete without some knuckles to the cranium. I mean…hey…I survived them. A few of them actually did teach me some lessons.
I’m with you Joe, these kids now-a-days…they need to learn some manners. I oughta’ get a switch and show them a thing or two. Back in my day, we had respect for our elders. If not, they just buried us alive and threw out the shovel. (This was before Congress and laws existed, mind you, when we had to walk up hill both ways and what-not.)

Looks like there’s a lot of violence in the hearts of my readers… and I guess I can’t complain about that!
(just don’t hurt me)
