Treking Spaces
Wednesday, November 19th, 2008Whooo boy…. that new Star Trek trailer hit this week, and man, does it get me excited. This series has been in desperate need of a reboot for some time now, and I look forward to the time where Trek can be relevant again. This film looks like it’ll change up a lot of things that Trekkers don’t want changed, and I know a lot of the hardcore fans want strict continuity, but lets be honest, following strict continuity can make stories stale and uninteresting, which is what Trek has kindof become. I mean, if Batman was still following the strict continuity from the 40s, that would be a bad thing. Every now and again you have to reinvent your icons and make them relevant to a new generation. I guess you could think of this as the “Batman Begins” or “Ultimate Spider-Man” of Star Trek.
Whether or not this change will be good change or bad change is what remains to be seen. I will say that J.J. Abrams makes me nervous… I haven’t seen all of his stuff, but what I have seen (Alias, Lost, Cloverfield) I have either not liked, or been very disapointed by. I realize that saying that will offend a lot of people out there, so feel free to declare your J.J. love if you want, but he just doesn’t usually do it for me. But I’m hoping that he can make this material really shine. And hey, it’s got Simon Pegg, so I’m garunteed some laughs, right?
To totally change the subject, I like today’s strip — I realize I do a really bad job of defining spaces in this strip, and I want to change that. So here, I’m gonna do a few strips where we make the cafeteria a place you’ll recognize. Think of it as my version of Calvin’s wagon, or Charlie Brown’s… wall… that he’s always leaning on… (what was that about anyway?).
Ahh, Charlie Brown… how your misery makes me feel ever so slightly better about my own life…
