Video Games?

Friday, January 9th, 2009

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I’m a fake gamer. Although there’s a few games I enjoy (w.o.w.?) I don’t keep up with video games, I don’t have any of the current-generation consoles, I only read ‘Game Informer’ for when they slam a bad game with their sharp, funny wit… no matter how you slice it, I just seem to have fallen out of the gaming world. So much so that I really didn’t realize what was considered normal in games anymore — I mean, I’m a guy whose favorite game on earth is “Chrono Trigger.” But this week, I’ve been watching my friend play through ‘Fallout 3.”

I haven’t played a lick of it myself, but I was so sucked into just watching this game, it was amazing. It felt like I was in the world of Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” series… the desolation, the barren wastes of land, the mutations, the guns, etc. It did such an amazing job of world-building that I didn’t even have to play the game to be sucked into it. I was staring in awe at the ruined landscapes, and scared to the point of jumping in my seat when a ghoul leapt from behind a corner.

I also enjoyed the non-linearness of it. You could follow the story, or not. Thats certainly not a new idea at all, but the amount of variety, and the way the story changes according to how you act is amazing.

I don’t know if a game that good is considered normal these days, or if it’s just head and shoulders above the rest, but I’m impressed.  It’s almost enough to get me back into gaming…
