Politics, Religion, and Burritos

This isn’t the first time this topic has come up here, but I’ve noticed an increasing hostility towards opposing burrito factions of late. In fact, around certain people, I’m more comfortable insulting their political views than their burrito preference.

So, if you don’t know, Freebird’s is a burrito place that started in California in the 80’s, and in the 90’s, became a legendary part of Texas A&M’s college experience. It’s ultra simplistic method of making awesome burritos (and it’s sassy indie attitude) caught on, and it seemed like every major campus in Texas had a rip-off version of it (UNT has ‘Hooya’ for example… lame name…). Eventually, Someone created Chipotle, which is basically the same exact business model Freebird’s always used, but they made a national chain out of it. To me, Chipotle is a sad, dying echo of what Freebirds is supposed to be.  But I know some people who prefer it… Just be sure to try the original before you judge whether one burrito is better than another. We should all be able to come together, in this new era of opportunity, and enjoy burritos of all kinds, together.

But… Chipotle is dumb.

Freebirds = best burrito. Chipotle = best chips, medium sauce, and guac. And when you realize there’s a Freebirds and a Chipotle on Belt Line, well then life is gooood. And you can hit Sonic if you drive just right and have a ten trillion calorie meal.

Funny joke, Mike. The punchline really being that everyone knows it’s Freebirds all the way. Nobody in real life would even try to put Chipotle above Freebird’s. You and your crazy imagination, where do you come up them!

  3. Mike

    Amen! Freebirds forever!

  4. Mike

Interesting… I expected you to come out for Freebirds all the way, Damon… truly you are diverse, and wise beyond your years… perhaps one day, there could be peace between burritos…

I have been to Chipotle many times in the DC area and one just opened in my neck of the woods. I have never been to a Freebirds due to the fact that I have never seen one, do they have them on the eastern seaboard? Any who, while I like the size of the burritos at Chipotle, I hardly eat there because I need a weeks salary just to pay for it. I tend to get my burritos at Baja Fresh in King of Prussia, PA. If I ever see a Freebirds, I will definitely try it out.

Yeah Vince, I hear you about the cost, Freebirds is about the same price range as Chipotle, and it’s a little on the high side. On the other hand, I always get a much, much higher quality of service at Freebirds. I’m not sure if they have any up north or not, it’s not nearly as wide of a chain as Chipotle has become. Do try it if you ever get a chance, I’m sure you won’t be dissapointed!

Unfortunately I’ve never seen a Freebirds, so it’s all Chipotle for me. I like getting the burrito bol and a bag of chips and just turn it all into nachos. Sadly here in Chicagoland, the Mexican food is terrible, so Chipotle is the closest to Tex-Mex I have. *le sigh*

Le Sigh indeed… that is the saddest story I’ve ever heard. Next time you’re in the southland, you gotta check out Freebirds.

You do know that McDonalds owned a majority interest in Chipotle at one time which means that it has been sullied forever unable to ever attaine the greatness of Freebirds

  10. Mike

I did not know that, but it’s not surprising. Anyway, gotta go get some chicken nuggets, I’ll see ya’ll later OH GOD THIS ISN’T MEAT

    There’s nothing wrong with McDonalds.

I hear ya about the service, the last time I was at a Chipotle there was only one employee and she seemed annoyed that she had a customer because it interrupted her cell phone conversation.

  13. Chris B.

I think you guys are going to the wrong Chipotle. I’ve never had bad service. One time I did have a woman that didn’t understand English well enough to understand my one special request, but at least she was working hard and TRYING to get the job done. Besides, it IS a tex-mex place, so somebody that speaks Spanish isn’t that unusual.

  14. Mike

Both good points. All I’m sayin’ is, does Chipotle offer cheerful, happy service from a cute chick with several awesome piercings and purple hair? I think you know the answer…

Also… the cell phone? really? I hate when people do that… man when I worked food service we had to turn our phones off, and for good reason.

  15. Chris B.

When I worked food service, nobody HAD cell phones.

  16. Mike

It’s getting harder to remember a time where I didn’t have one. I can’t believe that in high school, I had to remember everyone’s phone number… like, I just walked around with like 20 phone numbers memorized in my head… I can’t imagine doing that today…

Although, maybe that was a better way. If anything happened to my cell, and I needed to call someone on a pay phone, I couldn’t do it, since I don’t have ANY numbers memorized…
