Staple! Report

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Man, I am still exhausted from the awesome Staple! show in Austin last weekend. It’s about time I gave a full report for those that are interested.

It started with a bang Friday night hanging out at Austin Books, one of the best comic shops ever, and they proved it by having a keg. I got to meet up with some cool friends like Nate Bramble, and say hi to Kris Straub, who is always the nicest guy. Had a interesting Watchmen debate with some of the Space-Gun Studios guys. I am continually impressed with those guys, they always inspire me to break away from cartooning and try some “real” art, but then I get discouraged when it doesn’t look as awesome as their stuff, haha!

Saturday was the show, and it was awesome. I sold a lot of books, did some cool sketches (some of which you can see here) and met a lot of awesome people. I love interacting with you guys, hearing what you think about the comics, and just talking about whatever else you’re into. I was sharing a table with some guys from Antarctic Press, who, in addition to being ridiculously good artists, were also totally awesome people.

I got to me Danielle Corsetto, who I’ve been a fan of for a while, and I also had a great conversation with Chris Onstad. Man, that guy is the tops as far as I’m concerned. Quite literally the nicest, most approachable guy I’ve ever met at a con. Thanks for the encouragement Chris, and for the books!

That night, I got to hook up with some friends that live down in Austin that I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was total greatness. Then, it was off to the after party, which was a study in awesome. Live Art show, with DJs crankin’ so hard I could barely hold my Shiner — that is awesome. Then back to my friends house, who was also having a party. Realizing that it’s 6am, and you’re sitting in a Treehouse, feelin great, making new friends and connecting with old ones… you guessed it: awesome.

All in all, a fantastic weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out, thanks for reading, and thanks for encouraging me.  See ya next year!

Wonderful Women

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

If you’re like me, you’re a fan of the superheroes. And, if you’re like me, you’ve been eating up the new line of DC Comics animated DVDs (most of which are a little edgier, and PG-13 as a result). I just watched the newest one, “Wonder Woman.”

Now, if you’re like my roommates, you might say, “Wonder Woman? Seems dumb. Real superheroes are men. Superheroes are a manly thing — no woman, no matter how wonderful, can ever be as cool as Supes, or The Batman, or even Green Arrow.”

Well you’d be SO wrong. Man, this movie is awesome. There’s tons of awesome action, the animation not only features a really cool style, but is fluid, dynamic, and bursting with energy. The fight scenes are so freakin’ cool. On top of that the voice acting is excellent, although Nathan Fillion steals almost every scene as Steve Trevor. He’s pretty much channeling Malcolm Reynolds, which, lets be honest, is exactly what I want from him. The music is also excellent, and does the perfect job of finding the balance between Superhero Melodrama and Greek Adventure Epic. The story is the basic origin story of Wonder Woman, and while the scope is huge, the story never falls apart. The short running time might be unfortunate, considering there could be a lot added to this movie, but the pace is brisk, and you’re never bored.

Have you ever watched a movie epic, like Braveheart, or something similar, and you get to the big rousing speech right before the big battle? That St. Crispin’s Day moment where you’re super pumped and excited? In “Wonder Woman,” you feel like that through the whole running time of the movie. Or, atleast I did.

I figure not everyone will like this movie as much as I did, but man, it just struck a chord with me. I hope you guys get as much enjoyment out of it as I did.
