I Can Sing

If there are guys out there that are telling you that they hate the Disney Cartoon Musicals, that there is no redeeming value in any of them… I am telling you right now, there is atleast an 80% chance they are totally lying.

Every guy, no matter how tough, saw at least some of those as a kid, and they really get to you. I love Aladdin, and The Lion King, and some of the older ones. Stuff like Mulan and was a little after my time, so I missed out on those, but let’s be honest — Beauty and the Beast tugs at the heartstrings. The Great Mouse Detective and the Rescuers are great, fun adventure stories. I realize not all of these are full fledged musicals, but as cheesy and predictable as some of the music gets, it is still greatness.

I think Tarzan is freakin’ amazing. Robin Hood? SO fun. The Jungle Book is a total blast! I must’ve watched Peter Pan like 30 times when I was growing up.

Yeah, part of it is that I’m somewhat of an animation buff, but these are legitimately great films — and I think almost any guy can agree with that without losing their man card.

I think there is some truth to what you say. However, I think this stops at ANIMATED musicals. I pretty much hate all live-action musicals. I want the music and the acting separate. I have seen a “broadway” show (in London, actually) but Lisa picked one she was pretty sure I’d like. It was good, but any music heard live sounds better than music heard from an entertainment system.

I would probably agree to that. The animated musicals are fun, but I just cannot get into the live action ones. Other than “West Side Story,” (which is mostly nostalgia, and really only fun to talk about, not actually watch all the way through) I can’t think of one I’ve really enjoyed… Some of the Gershwin ones have cool music in them if you’re a jazz-head, but I’d rather hear real jazz musicians playing those tunes in another context, rather than watch the actual stage show.
